“Virals” by Kathy Reichs

Kathy Reichs is one of my favourite murder mystery writers. Her books, featuring a character called Temperance Brennan, have been made into the television series, Bones.

Now Reichs has created a new series for young adult readers. Virals is part mystery, part fantasy, and part forensic science, with lots of action thrown in.

One of the main characters is Tory Brennan, the neice of Temperance who shares her love of science. In fact Tory, along with three other local kids, call themselves “Sci-Philes”. They’re fascinated by science and love to explore the marshes of the nearby Loggerhead Island. This is where the mystery part comes in. As they explore the Island they discover that there is something strange going on at the Loggerhead Research Institute. As they explore the Institute they come across an illegal experiment which changes their DNA, and their lives, forever.

It’s a great book to read. Very engrossing and intruiging.

Don’t take my word for it though. Have a look at some of the reviews on the internet, here and here.

There has been a Virals website developed to support the book. Great to explore, particularly after you’ve read the book.

Have a look at the Youtube interview of Kathy Reichs talking about her new book, Virals.
